Welcome from the Principal

Thank you for your interest in Campton Academy, which is part of the Bedfordshire Schools Trust (BEST).

We are a small, rural lower school which has been serving the community of Campton and Chicksands for 150 years.

I am delighted to be back at Campton, having been interim Principal during the Covid pandemic and the school’s transition into BEST.

I know the fantastic staff and some of the pupils at the school already, and am looking forward to meeting parents and carers and working with them for the benefit of their children.

I am also really looking forward to celebrating the 150th anniversary of the school throughout this term.

As part of our 150 years of Education at Campton, the children have been writing poems. These were judged by the Trust's English Lead and the winners were announced today in assembly. Mrs Dean, one of our governors, very kindly came into school to present the winners with their certificate and prize.

What a fantastic trip down memory lane we had earlier at our 150th anniversary open morning. We were delighted to welcome lots of former pupils and families, ex-staff and members of the community - for some, it was their first trip back since their last day at school. Thank you to all who joined us to look through photos and registration books from the archives and share your stories - it was fascinating to hear of schooldays from many decades ago! Here's a selection of photos from earlier. We've got lots of individual photos and stories still to share - so watch this space!

Proudly hanging in our school hall is this special banner celebrating our 150th anniversary! We were lucky enough to have a textile artist join us for two days last week, and all pupils in the school took part in its design. Every child printed their own personalised flower using a Thermofax screen and ink and blended colours. They then had the opportunity to hand stitch detail to their flowers, and also had use of a sewing machine. For an extra personalised touch, the animals you can see in the banner are the names of the classes in the school. It was a real delight to see the expressions from the children when they first saw it hanging in the hall. And, if you're joining us for our 150th anniversary open morning tomorrow (Saturday 8th March, 10am until noon) then make sure you come and see it, too!

Today we celebrated Number Day with a special assembly and number games and activities in the classroom. The children came to school dressed in some amazing number themed costumes!

In assembly today staff, children and the Chair of Governors said thank you and good luck to Mrs Fraher as she steps down from the role of Principal. Wishing you every success and happiness in your new job.

Many thanks to all the families who were able to join us for our special event last Friday to mark Children's Mental Health Week. Mrs Fraher shared with parents and carers the many ways our curriculum at Campton supports the emotional development of pupils, before they heard from some of the children themselves about the various activities they enjoy taking part in. Will George, who is BEST's Mindfulness Coach, then took the opportunity to talk about how the practice is providing a benefit in our school and across the trust in general. The event then finished with parents getting the chance to visit some classrooms to gain even greater insight into our support. Thank you again to everyone, we hope you enjoyed the afternoon!

FREE MINDFULNESS TRAINING OPPORTUNITY FOR PARENTS AND CARERS As part of BEST's mission to grow mindfulness and its impact across the school community we are extending our offer to provide free mindfulness courses for the parents and carers of our students, starting with a taster session after half-term. Today we celebrated Safer Internet Day during assembly and computing lessons. This years theme is Online Scams. We talked about how to recognise scams, how to stay safe if we see an online scam and who we can talk to if we are worried or need help.

We're marking 150 years of education in Campton with a series of special events after half-term. Pupils will be taking part in a number of activities in their classes, including creating a tapestry. We will then be throwing open our doors on the morning of Saturday 8th March - the actual anniversary date of a school board being set up in the parish in 1875. Come and see our pupils' work, including the tapesty, and tour round the school. Refreshments will also be available. Everyone is welcome between 10am and noon - we'd particularly love to welcome back any past pupils or staff to celebrate this historic occasion with us!

ANNOUNCEMENT Sarah Fraher will be stepping down as Principal of Campton Academy at February half-term. Mrs Fraher has decided to pursue a new challenge aligning with her passion for the delivery of SEND provision, across the wider Central Bedfordshire area. She will also continue working for the school as SENDCo for one day a week. Mrs Fraher has been an integral part of the Campton community for nearly 20 years, having initially joined the school in 2006 as an NQT. She became interim Principal in January 2021, shortly after the school had joined the Bedfordshire Schools Trust (BEST), with her appointment being made permanent in April 2022. Mrs Fraher said: "It has been an absolute privilege having the opportunity to work with so many young people and their families over the past 18+ years. When I started as a newly qualified teacher, I never imagined the opportunities that would come my way." Taking over as Principal will be Susanne Combe, who is BEST's Director of Training and Professional Development. Ms Combe is someone who knows our school very well, having previously held the same role five years ago, successfully navigating us through the Covid pandemic and our transition into BEST. Today staff and children marked Remembrance Day at the village memorial by singing Shalom, observing the two minutes silence and year 4 children reading their Remembrance poems. Mr Brian Oertel from The Royal British Legion joined us to play The Last Post and Reveille.

We were delighted to share our annual harvest celebration with families and the wider community this morning. Thank you to the Church of All Saints Campton for welcoming us to their beautiful church.
